White Wedding Dress

The Christian bride’s wedding dress is usually white or ivory, as this symbolizes purity. A black or dark coloured wedding gown is considered a taboo. White is the symbol of the bride’s purity in heart and life, and also a mark of reverence to the God.


Bridal Bouquet

The type of flowers clutches during the wedding ceremony signifies her emotions towards the marriage. In olden times, the bridal boutique has herbs and spices instead of flowers. It was believed that these strongly aromatic plants will ward off evil spirits intent on possessing the bride.




The Veil and the Bridesmaids

The purpose of the bride wearing a veil dates back to when people believed evil spirits were around to try and ruin the wedding ceremony. Likewise, bridesmaids were made part of the ceremony surround the bride so evil spirits would be confused about who the actual bride was. Many couples still honour this custom. Veils are also symbols of the modesty and purity of the bride and her reverence for God.




Flower Girls

Flower girls are cute girls at the head of the wedding procession. They spread petals down the aisle for the bride to walk on flowers. The flowers the girls carry or strew about symbolize fertility and hope. Either way, the beauty of flowers and the cuteness of the flower girls add cheer to the wedding festivities.


Exchanging of the Rings

The wedding ring is an outward symbol of the couple's inward bond. Rings being an unending circle mark the eternal quality of love. When the couple wears a wedding ring, they also supposed to demonstrate their submission to the God's authority over their marriage. When they exchange wedding rings, it symbolizes giving of all their resources like wealth, possessions, talents, and emotions to the other.




Lighting the Candle

Christian marriages are performed during a Holy Mass. Soon the ceremony is over the couple will be invited to light a candle together. This lighting of the candle signifies their union before the Lord that they are not two persons hereafter, but one. The lighting also symbolizes the lighting up of a new life together.


Wedding Cake

The wedding cake is cut together by the couple during the wedding reception. Then the husband and wife exchange bites of the cake. This is the first act the couple does together as a husband and wife. The sweetness of the cake symbolizes caring and nurturance between the couple. Wedding cakes are also usually white, to symbolize purity. Cake and wine are served to all remembering the wedding at Cana where Jesus performed the first miracle of changing water into wine.
